F. Pierson, of Fredericksbug; Mrs. W. G. Kent, of Clifton Forge; Mrs. W. H. Sothoron, of Baltimore; one son, Edwin Bartleson, of Spotsylvania, and one sister, Mrs. L. A. Harris, of Spotsylvania. (Free Lance Star :6, Reported 1942.01.02) In the passing of Edward S. Bartleson, Spotsylvania Co., has lost one of her most prominent and highly esteemed citizens. He at one time may have been the Co.’s most able building contractor. - His greatest achievement was the restoration of Spotsylvania Court House as it now is. The original building had been badly damaged by fire and shell during the War Between the States. All of the construction of residences around the C.H. are accredited to his work and design. - He was born in Phila., the son of John Wesley Bartleson, inventor and manufacturer of a churn. The terrible depression of industry which followed the War between the States into th 70's closed his manufacturing interests. - In 1875 he came to Virginia and purchased the DuVal tract of some 500 acres, on which portion thereof the late Edward Bartleson resided, he coming to the Co. at the age of ten. - Mr. Bartleson’s relatives of Phila. have appeared very prominent in business circles. His Uncle, A. Clayton Woodman, was, at the time of his death, President of the Sinclair-Richfield Oil Co. His grandfather, Peter Bartleson, a descendent of a noted English family, was marked for distinction in the War of the Revolution 1776. - Edward S. Bartleson leaves to the County a high standard of good citizenship for which the County will always honor his name. (An obituary, written by Leonard F. Pierson Jan. 13, 1942, found in notes of his wife, Eva Pearl Bartleson.) - Edwin S. Bartleson, 76 year 8 month 9 day old white male Farmer, husband of
